IN VITRO FERTILISATION (IVF): PATIENT INFORMATION
What Is Needed for a Successful IVF?
A successful outcome depends on three fundamental pillars:
• A healthy egg (oocyte) to provide the genetic foundation.
• Healthy sperm capable of successful fertilisation.
• A healthy uterus to provide a supportive environment for the pregnancy.
A successful IVF depends on a few key factors - often described using the seed and soil principle.
The seed refers to the quality of the embryo, which is formed from a healthy egg and a competent sperm. Good-quality eggs and sperm combine to create strong embryos with a better chance of implantation and development.
The soil represents the endometrium (womb lining). Even the best embryo needs a receptive, well-prepared uterus to implant and grow. Proper thickness, blood supply, and hormonal support of the endometrium are essential for success.
In IVF, both the quality of the embryo (seed) and the readiness of the womb (soil) work together to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
The IVF Journey: Step-by-Step
1. Ovarian Stimulation
While a natural cycle typically produces one egg, IVF uses medication to encourage the ovaries to develop multiple eggs. This significantly increases the chances of creating a viable embryo.
• Your Plan: Your doctor will tailor a specific protocol (Short, Long, or Antagonist) based on your unique medical profile.
2. Egg Retrieval (Ovum Pick-Up)
Once the eggs reach optimal maturity, they are collected via a minor procedure.
• Comfort: Performed under a short general anaesthetic so you won't feel pain.
• Timing: The procedure is quick, safe, and usually completed within 15–30 minutes.
3. Fertilisation & Embryo Culture
• The Lab: Eggs and sperm are combined in a controlled laboratory environment.
• Monitoring: Our embryologists check for fertilisation the following day.
