Monitoring Baby’s Movement and Growth
🎤 Introduction
Fetal well-being means checking that:
• Your baby is growing properly
• Your baby is active and healthy
• Your baby is getting enough oxygen and nutrients
Early detection of problems helps prevent complications.
1️⃣ Monitoring Baby’s Movement
👶 Why Baby’s Movement Is Important
A moving baby is usually a healthy baby.
Movement shows that the baby is receiving enough oxygen.
📅 When Do Movements Start?
• First-time mothers: around 18–20 weeks
• Mothers who have been pregnant before: around 16–18 weeks
At first, movements feel like:
• Flutters or vibrations
• Butterflies
• Gentle kicks
⏰ Daily Movement Monitoring (After 28 Weeks)
From 28 weeks onward, mothers should monitor baby’s movements daily.
👉 Simple Kick Count Method:
1. Lie on your side (preferably left side).
2. Focus on baby’s movements.
3. Count how long it takes to feel 10 movements.
Normally:
• You should feel 10 movements within 2-8 hours (often much sooner).
If:
• Baby moves significantly less than usual
• You feel no movement
➡️ Go to the hospital immediately. Do not wait till the next day.
2️⃣ *Monitoring Baby’s Growth*
📏 How We Check Growth at the Clinic
During antenatal visits, we assess growth by:
✔ Measuring your abdomen (fundal height)
✔ Checking your weight gain
✔ Listening to the baby’s heartbeat
✔ Performing ultrasound when necessary
📊 What Is Fundal Height?
Fundal height is the measurement from:
• The top of your uterus (womb)
• To your pubic bone
After 20 weeks, the measurement in centimeters roughly matches the number of weeks of pregnancy.
For example:
• 28 weeks ≈ 28 cm
If the measurement is:
• Too small → Baby may not be growing well
• Too large → Could indicate excess fluid, big baby or multiple pregnancy
Further tests may be required.
3️⃣ Other Ways to Assess Fetal Well-Being
In some cases, the doctor may request:
• Ultrasound scan
• Doppler studies (to check blood flow)
• Non-stress test (CTG) to monitor heartbeat patterns
These help detect:
• Growth restriction
• Placental problems
• Reduced oxygen supply
💛 When to Seek Help Immediately
• Reduced or absent baby movement
• Sudden abdominal pain
• Vaginal bleeding
• Water breaking early
• Severe headache or swelling
💛 Key Messages for Mothers
✔ Attend all antenatal appointments
✔ Monitor baby’s movements daily after 28 weeks
✔ Eat balanced meals
✔ Take prescribed medications
✔ Report concerns immediately
📌 Remember
A baby that moves well and grows well is usually healthy.
Your awareness is one of the most important tools in protecting your baby.
