CANCER AWARENESS: A GUIDE FOR OUR COMMUNITY
What Is Cancer?
Cancer occurs when certain cells in the body begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably.
• These cells can form a lump (tumor), damage healthy organs, and potentially spread to other parts of the body.
• Cancer affects everyone: men, women, and children alike.
Dispelling the Myths: What Cancer Is NOT
It is important to understand the truth to protect our families:
• Not Witchcraft: Cancer is not caused by curses, enemies, or spiritual punishment. It is a biological disease of the cells.
• Not Contagious: You cannot "catch" cancer from another person through touch, sharing food, or living together.
• Faith & Medicine: While prayer and faith provide vital strength, they work best alongside medical treatment. Do not choose one over the other.
Why Does Cancer Happen?
Cancer usually develops slowly over many years. Common risk factors include:
• Lifestyle: Smoking, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol.
• Health: Poor diet, lack of exercise, and certain chronic infections (like Hepatitis B or HPV).
• Biology: Family history and the natural process of aging.
⚠️ Warning Signs: When to See a Doctor
Early detection is the most powerful tool we have. Please visit a hospital if you notice:
• Lumps: Any new or unusual swelling anywhere on the body.
• Bleeding: Unusual bleeding or discharge.
• Weight Loss: Losing weight quickly without trying.
• Non-healing Sores: Wounds or mouth sores that do not heal.
• Changes: Persistent pain or changes in bowel/urination habits.
Prevention & Treatment
The good news: Cancer is treatable, especially when caught early.
Important Message to the Community
Delaying hospital care can cost a life. > Do not rely solely on herbal mixtures or spiritual healing for a physical disease. If you notice a change in your body, go to the hospital immediately.
Early Detection Saves Lives.
