Braxton Hicks: Understanding "Practice" Contractions*
*What are they?*
Braxton Hicks are simply your body’s way of practicing for birth. They are normal and do not mean you are in true labor.
• *The Feeling:* Your tummy feels very tight or "rock hard."
• *The Timing:* They usually last about 30 seconds to a minute.
• *The Sensation:* They are usually uncomfortable or "weird" rather than sharp or painful.
*Is it True Labor or a "Practice" Move?*
Use this quick check to tell the difference:
• *Practice (Braxton Hicks)*: They are irregular. They come and go at random times and do not get closer together.
True Labor : The contractions follow a pattern (e.g., every 5 minutes) and stay consistent or get faster.
• *The "Rest Test*": If you sit down, drink water, or change your position and the tightening stops, it was Braxton Hicks. True labor will not stop.
*Why is this happening right now?*
Sometimes your body sends a "practice" contraction because it needs something. Common triggers include:
• Dehydration: You may need more water.
• Activity: You’ve been moving around a lot.
• A Full Bladder: Your body’s way of saying "go to the bathroom!"
• Baby Moving: Your little one is being extra active.
*3 Steps to Feel Better*
If you feel a tightening, try these in order:
1. Drink: Have two large glasses of water.
2. Rest: Lie down on your left side and breathe deeply.
3. Soothe: Take a warm (not hot) bath or drink a warm cup of milk.
🚩 *When to Call Your Doctor Immediately*
Don't hesitate to call or go to the hospital if you notice any of these "Red Flags":
• The contractions become painful or feel like they are "wrapping" around from your back to your front.
• They become regular (you can time them).
• You see any blood or "leaking" of fluid.
• You feel the baby is moving less than usual.
*Key Message for Mothers*
